APPENDIX A

Green Paternal Ancestry

Mauhawgaw is the earliest known and recorded Iowa Indian chief whom we have been able to verify and appears to be the oldest known direct link of descent of the Green family. No birth or death date data is known. His son, Mahuskah, or White Cloud 1, succeeded as chief thus became the first White Cloud in a long line of Iowa Chiefs.

At the time Mahuskah - hereafter referred to as White Cloud I was chief, the Iowas were the most numerous and powerful tribe, next to the Sioux, of all the tribes between the Mississippi and the Missouri Rivers. Although his war adventures were numerous, daring, and successful, White Cloud I.wisely learned the ways of peace in dealing with his Indian opponents and the ever increasing white population. He and his wife, Flying Pigeon, were called to Washington, D. C. to attend a treaty meeting in the early 1800s. During the couple's return trip to their midwest home, a tragic event developed. Nearing evening on one of the return days, White Cloud I rode ahead of Flying Pigeon and their young son Francis to find a campsite. After finding a proper location, White Cloud I returned to guide his wife and son to the campsite. During his absence, Flying Pigeon's horse had stepped into a hole, stumbled, and fallen on Flying Pigeon, killing her instantly. Francis was unharmed and lived to bear the Christian name of Francis White Cloud and to succeed his father as chief of the Iowas.

Upon reaching manhood, Francis, d. 1859, married Mary Robidoux, b. 1802 d. 1884. Mary was the daughter of a fur trader who is recognized as the founder of St. Joseph, Missouri. Six children were born to this union:

1. Robert b.1833 d. 1863          4. Eliza b. 1841 d. 1886

2. James b. 1848 d. 1940         5. Jeff b. 1846 d. 1892

3. Sarah b. 1842 d. 1883          6. Martha
