GeneWeb Service BUG Information

Known Bugs or other issues

The editor problem listed below (in rather small type to save space) has been fixed. However, one item related to this remains. The uploaded files from "MS Windows" and "Apple Corp Macs" contain undesirable characters. These are CRLF (MS) and CR (Mac). If not cleaned of these characters, your customized pages will display incorrectly. To properly clean the uploaded customized files ( .txt files ), simply do this;
Load the Web Editor. Select "Advanced". Click the small radio button next to the filename of the uploaded file and click Edit. Now, once the file is displayed, simply click "Save". Your file is now cleaned. Repeat this process for each .txt file you upload. This one small step will save you hours of unpleasant work and ensure your Geneweb looks exactly as you wanted.

A method of cleaning your files at upload is now being tested. Until it is available, please use this process. Thanks, Sysadmin

The upload problem fix has been applied and tested. There are no known problems with GeneWeb.

Bug 1 is closed. Info log below is the problem and fix ...

1. A problem has arisen when using the built-in Web Editors' "EDIT" function in the file /geneweb/gw/ge/lang/start.txt. It seems the little guy changes the default accent character in non-english languages (esp French) into something GeneWeb misinteprets. In the following links, click on them one at a time, then use "View Source" to note detail. The accent, see here in line starting with "fr:" of Default Start.txt . Now, compare with Editor Modified Start.txt . The difference is quite noticable. There may be more but these are easy to spot. This might help;

Original Start.txt    "Saved" Start.txt
esc'd char (&) eacute; (26 65 61 63 75 74 65 3B Hex)    non-esc'd char é (E9 Hex)
esc'd char (&) ograve; (26 6F 67 72 61 76 65 3B Hex)    non-esc'd char ò (F2 Hex)

Now, this is not to say that this is the only problem but it certainly is A problem. Don't have OCAML loaded so can't say why the esc'd are used. Perhaps a knowledgeable type will wander by with that answer.
OK, now, on with a temporary workaround. I suggest NOT using the Web Editor to edit the /geneweb/gw/gw/lang/start.txt but instead, make changes on your local copy and upload for each change. Does this suck? Yes. Will a permanent fix be applied soon? Hope so. Until then, good luck.

    A. Suggestion from member Cabletoru is to use an editor called, "TextPad" from LINK would help eliminate the problem mentioned above. Sounds like a great idea though it's not been tested with any other member or with us.
     B. We further don't think it is a Unix/Linux issue though we could still be proven wrong. The application in question, "Thumper" is written in PERL and wouldn't care what it runs on. So, if anything, it is a PERL vs. OCAML issue though, again, we don't think that is the problem either...
     C. Have tried to replace all the "&xxxx; characters with html "&#YYY; values, (21 different ones btw), no help. Still eliminating...
     D. **Some success. Have been able to make the page display ok with careful editing of the start.txt file in hex. It seems there are "0D" characters being introduced somewhere along the way. Hmm, at least that's something.. Stay tuned
     E. ****More success. Can now do automatic hex editing. Automatic by me, not yet fully automatic. Real close now...
     F. *******Finished. No need to run filters, PERL filters nicely. This page may dissolve soon...
