We will try to walk you through some of the more important areas in the Main service.
| Login | If you have already singed up, simply enter username/password. Else, hit the "Click Here" button to start the sign-up process. A note on Security. USG will NEVER sell, trade or disclose personal information to anybody, organization or group. EVER. |
| Register | Note the email address in the grey box. Please drop a note to us there if you have any questions.
Please fill in the form as you like. You need not enter any personal information. The data from this form is entered
into you profile (which is displayable by all!!). The email address is for us to contact you about site news (if you want it, more later) and account
confirmation letter. The next page asks yet more questions after prefilling a few boxes. The important
ones here are the username/password. These will be used to create your email address and
webpage url. These are generated as;
email "username@usgenealogy.net" webpage "http://www.usgenealogy.net/members/username" Kindly note both and keep a record for safe keeping. Username must be a oneword (no spaces) entry 20 characters or less |
| Picture | Click link at bottom to upload a picture of your choice. This will be displayed whenever someone goes to your profile. There are many ways for people to find your profile. For example, when you are "In Community", you are visible to others in the "Who is on line" link. So, have a picture (.JPEG or .GIF) handy. You don't HAVE to do this however. You may do this at a later time. |
| NetClubs | Here find account confirmation. Also, an opportunity to create a "NetClub". We advise doing this as it is a major method of finding you and your information. Also, you might well be spending a large chunk of your time either in your or someone elses Club. The Clubs offer a massive amount of interaction with fellow members. Chat room, discussion boards, instant messages, email, file and picture sharing are all available here. We think this area is THE major tool/activity of note here and what separates us from everyone else. . Please take advantage of this one. Next page you will be asked to select specific information about you and your club. The Big Item here is the description box. Please, please enter at least your username, interests, Genealogy info and other items you wish to be known and seen as. The contents in the description box are used as searchable terms. Thus, if someone wishes to find a club having to do with blue wiget making and you have entered "blue" or "widget" or "making", your club will be displayed as a search result. This is how we meet people of similar interests, locales or family name. One more little tidbit, the name of the club is turned into a URL (internet address) so keep it as short as possible and descriptive. After submission of info, you may go to your brand spanking new NetClub. Note the Blue link near top, this is your NetClub address. You may use this as a link in your webpage and or give it to friends, etc. That is a direct link to your netclub and it is accessible from anywhere on the net. Neat huh? |
| After getting into the main section of the community you will note a small blue link banner near
the top of the page. Included in these links are, "Main" (takes you to the General page),
"Instant Message" (ICQ-like realtime chatter), "My HomePage" (WebPage creator), "BuddyList"
(AOL IM like chatter), "Profile"(displays your info, can edit here too), "Email"(Setup, send and receive
email tool). As stated elsewhere in this document and others, your email address is " username@usgenealogy.net". However, this is for sending. The setup section will ask for pop mail address. This is for receiving. Enter the pop mail info from your ISP to have your mail available for reading. If you wish not to use your ISP's account, we suggest HotPOP, a free pop mail service. Also your login username/password are required. We don't look at this info and it is highly unlikely anyone else will be able to see/steal/use it. Then, after all is setup correctly, you are ready to send and receive mail using USG as your mail handler. Hint; to send to multiple addresses, separate each "To:" with a comma. |
|
| HomePage Creator | Simply click the link and a new window opens asking which editor to use. The "Easy" option should be used if you are unfamiliar with HTML coding. It offers ready made templates from which to choose. Also, if you had done a "Copy" of your NetClub address, you could "Paste" it onto a page so people could access it. You have 3mb of webspace free and more if you need. See Premium Upgrades for more info. |
